Somewhere in the 80s, trucker Jack Burton arrives in a small town to deliver his cargo and win a few bucks playing cards with the locals down at the Chinese market. Practically bankrupting nearly all of his opponents, his friend Wang bets him a game of "double or nothing" to try and regain his cash and loses. Jack wants his well earned money, but Wang explains he doesn't have the cash on him and that'll he pay later because he's due to pick up a long, lost girlfriend from the airport. Convinced Wang's pulling something sly, Jack insists he drive Wang to the airport so they can stick together. However, at the airport Wang's girlfriend is captured by the Lords of Death, a streetwise Chinatown gang. She is essential for an upcoming plan to revive a thousand year old Chinese sorcerer and bring him back to the world as a mortal again. So begins a daring adventure to rescue Wang's girl and stop the ruthless operation that's going on down in Little China. Teaming up with a cast of very different individuals, Jack and Wang delve deep into an uncovering conspiracy in which everything's not exactly as it seems. Here comes big trouble…
Wang chi's girlfriend has been kidnapped because she has emerald green eyes and has been selected to be Lo Pan's (an immortal creature) wife. By marrying her, Lo Pan can now become mortal again. So it's up to Jack Burten, Egg Shen, Wong and his friends to save her before it's too late.
This has to still be the best fantasy action comedy ever, I can never see any film over powering this. I grew on Big Trouble in little China and to do this day it still pulls all the punches which Carpenter does not do anymore but at least we have this film to keep in our memories of his greatness including The Thing and Escape from New York.<br/><br/>I showed it to my girlfriend not long ago because she is a big fan of fantasy films and I was sure that she would like it, but after it finished she said &quot;it was OK, not the classic you were rambling on about&quot;, you can imagine my disbelief when she said that, I can tell you now she didn&#39;t get any that night, that&#39;s for sure. I just can&#39;t see how anybody can find a fault with his. Kurt Russell to this day is the most funniest actor I have seen in this type of film, pretending to be the hard man which he is but always seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Forget Schwarzegger, forget Stallone and Van Damme, Kurt Russell was the action hero of the 80&#39;s, in my book he was.
In the late 70&#39;s and the 80&#39;s you had directors…and then you had John Carpenter.<br/><br/>Big Trouble in Little China is right up there with his other classics such as Escape from New York, The Fog, Assault on Precinct 13, and The Boy Who Could Fly. Films like this are movie magic. They remind you why you used to enjoy going to the cinema so much. Nowadays films concern themselves with CGI and 3D whereas Carpenter was a director who believed in giving the audience a story first. Effects are merely props. The key to a great movie is the characters and the choice of cast playing them. Could anyone ever imagine Snake Pliskin being played by any actor other than Kurt Russell or anyone other then the late great Ernest Borgnine driving a yellow NY taxi? If you grew up in the 80&#39;s then a description of this film is pointless. Chances are you&#39;ve already seen it over and over again. If you&#39;re a 90&#39;s kid and you&#39;re wondering what all the fuss is about then put down your xbox controller for a couple hours, put some popcorn in the microwave, shove the DVD in the player, dim the lights and then sit back and bask in the chop-socky-comic-book-glory of this movie!
Director John Carpenter seems to be trying to make an action-adventure along the lines of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. The effect goes horribly awry.
It is unknown and totally up for personal opinion. Some believe that he was attacked and killed by the beast hitching a ride on his truck, whereas others are confident that Jack would have defeated the creature and continued on his journey. At one point, a sequel was announced, but later scrapped, starring Kurt Russell. This would suggest that Jack Burton was alive and lived to fight another day. Upon seeing that Lo-Pan&#39;s has been killed, out of sadness and anger, he either lost temper and uncontrollably exploded, or allowed himself to explode on purpose in order to commit suicide. The Theatrical Version lacks the Kurt Russel comment &quot;Fuck it!&quot;. The later released VHS contains this comment but lacks some other footage of the turf war between the two clans. The DVD and Blu-ray are uncut.
